a KULN INTERVIEW by Alexandra Teriiska, bg.indizoo.com

indizoo: Alexandra starts off right to the point... what do you guys drink! Any Sponsors out there? Bulgaria is a hard drinking, hard working, hard playing kind of place, so if it's hard and heavy you want here ya are! KULN vocalist Boyan goes from soft whispers of melodic refrain to the tuned roar of an F-16 going vertical in full afterburner...you find yourself left hanging at the fringes of the atmosphere and in an out of control free fall back to earth wondering what happened?
By the way, I am drinking sake as I post this interview...
Hello, indizoo BG, America and indizoo world! We are KULN band; I am Boyan (vocal/ bass guitar)! I am Ivan (drums). I am Georgi (guitar).
- Boyan: Until the now we have two recorded albums and seven videos which can be seen on the Internet. We have also three national tours within the last three years.
Alexandra: What is KULN band’s favorite drink?
Georgi: There are many, I don’t know exactly.
Ivan: Beer, beer!
Boyan: Home-made rakiya and Jack Daniel’s.
Georgi: We mix them.
Boyan: Yeah, we like to mix. We drink the same drink almost never; Georgi and me usually drink rum.
indizoo: I like these guys! very creative.

Alexandra: What is the craziest thing a fan has done at your concerts?
Ivan: Jumping from a 2-meters-high stage and throwing himself down in the pogo.
Georgi: Two chicks who were standing in front of the stage were distracting the band’s attention so we couldn’t play our hit songs (smiles). They were standing and kissing each other in a very erotic manner.
Boyan: As far as I see, there is a not a lot of interesting stuff out of the stage. Or at least I cannot think of any right now.
indizoo: Don't know how Ivan missed the girls kissing, but you gotta give Boyan credit for his focus on the music.

Alexandra: What can we expect from now on?
Boyan: I hope we will make our fourth tour in the autumn. Before that we want to record our third album.
Georgi: We are very interested in this moment, because are making the songs for the new album. This, at least for me, is the best thing about the existence of a band like KULN – when you prepare new material and see how the things happen and you like the results. For me this is really exciting.
Ivan: For me as well, because I’ve been playing in the band for four years already and this new material would be the first I have completely taken part in. So I can’t wait us to make a good album and everybody to be happy.
Alexandra: Tell me more details about the new album?
Ivan: I think the concept is the music and the songs themselves. They are new and interesting. Our last two albums are also interesting, but this one is going to be a product of the three of us. For me that's exciting.
Georgi: I can say for sure that the new songs bring more mood, they are different, as already mentioned. The first album was very heterogeneous, the songs were quite scattered. The idea of the second one was to concentrate and say: “This is the band! – at least in this very moment”. The new stuff is a little bit away from what we have done until now. I think that’s good.
Boyan: In general most of the characteristic features of KULN are being saved, but maybe it’s a new level, a step forward and upwards. If you keep in mind a long time has passed since the release of our second album, with each one of us different things have happened and inevitably something has changed, also the searches. What we impart in the new songs must be somehow different, to give the people something new.
Bez Lice Video, Kuln Band Alexandra: What kind of development is that – from musical, emotional or personal point of view?
Georgi: All of these.
Boyan: As musicians we haven’t become particularly better than before. But the presentation in front of the audience is definitely better, also the things we have “invested” in the new songs. I hope the people will feel it.
Ivan: I think from musician’s point of view there’s also some kind of prosperity concerning the composition, the synchrony, the way we do things, the harmony, the technical approaches. When we change place in the band, there’s no way the concept and the synchrony stay the same. What is different about the new songs is the fact that the whole band has participated more together, concretely the three of us. Everybody from the band has given his share. This also leads to a certain change in the sound. It was not like that in the previous album, at least not as much.

Alexandra: What is your first association when you think about KULN?
Georgi: When I think about KULN, I think about Ivan and Boyan, I see them pretty often (laughing).
Boyan: I can hardly describe it with one word; KULN is the word through which I can describe what I feel about the band, the feeling for something you can impart your whole energy into.
Ivan: I don’t know how to say it any different from Boyan, but when I think about KULN, as Georgi said, I think about the people I am working with.
Georgi: When you say “KULN”, you think about pleasure – you’ll play, you’ll make new songs, it’s cool.

Alexandra: Five favorite bands of KULN?
Tool, Deftones, A Perfect Circle, Korn, Muse.
Alexandra: Which non-Bulgarian band do you want to share stage with?
Ivan: Deftones.
Georgi: There are many of them.
Ivan: We have played with many bands with different musical directions, but the ones we want to play with are individual wishes. For me personally, I would be very happy to play with Deftones or as support band of Tool.
Boyan: I think we share the stage good enough with the Bulgarian bands. It’s not our top goal to play with well-known bands, it’s not the case. If they want to share stage with us, they are welcome to invite us (laughing).
indizoo: When it comes to talent I think Boyan and KULN are being a bit modest. Take a look at the videos and listen to the music, keep in mind these guys are producing this incredible music in an environment that offers little to no support and where the average income is well less than half the poverty level in the US. I think the quality of their work speaks to the talent motivation and resourcefulness of KULN and they should be opening for the likes of Deftones, Tool and others.
