Roots and Culture Artist Fantan Mojah Releases Strongerin stores November 18th with Greensleeves
Fantan Mojah will unleash his upcoming album Stronger, the long awaited follow up from his debut Hail The King. The reggae vocalist ranks as one of the most rated singers during this popular resurgence of conscious roots music and will continue to spread love and peace on Stronger.

The heavyweight album boasts modern roots production from the hottest producers like Frenchie, Shane Brown, Jam 2, Pow Pow, Lion Vibes and Special Delivery. The title track and first single "Stronger"(produced by Frenchie) and powerful prodigious production "Can't Frame I" (Special Delivery) sets the tone for this roots revival set. Fantan gives thanks and praise on the "Jah Jah You Are The One", "Dun Dem", "Jah Time", "How Can I Be Ungrateful" and "Most High Jah". He also addresses social ills on "So Many Problems" and "Where Is Love" and then inspires listeners with "Stay Positive", "Fight To Survive" and closing track "You Can Make It".

Fantan Mojah was born in the parish of St. Elizabeth, the "cockpit country" of the Maroons the runaway slaves long famed for their resilience and resistance. Their unbroken link with their African ancestry has resulted in a latent culture that has retained much of that African oriented past and this is most audible in the music coming from the region and exemplified by the music of Fantan Mojah.

Fantan Mojah began his journey with one the most popular cultural deejays, Capleton, as his spiritual and musical mentor. Capleton encouraged the youth to change his initial name Mad Killer to Fantan Mojah as a more proper reflection of his Rasta beliefs. In 2004, Fantan Mojah released his first Jamaican hit "Hungry" with Down Sound Records, which stayed at the #1 position for 8 weeks in a row. In 2005, his first album "Hail The King" sailed to #1 in Jamaica. After headlining eminent stage shows and touring extensively to sell out crowds around Europe and North America in 2007 and 2008, Fantan anticipates his latest release "Stronger" to hit stores this late November.

A MOMENT IN REGGAE HISTORY RANDY’S 50th ANNIVERSARY CD & DVD COLLECTION IN STORES TODAY!!
Celebrating it's Role in the Birth of Reggae & Evolution into the World's Largest Caribbean Music Label

From Kingston, Jamaica to Jamaica, New York, respect is due to Randy's because the former Kingston-based retail shop and studio, which eventually grew into the world's leading reggae label VP Records, set the trend. Celebrating 50 years in the business on a 2 CD/DVD collection (in stores late October 2008), Reggae Anthology: Randy's 50th Anniversary brings together 50 of the studio's greatest productions organized by era and features musical icons like Bob Marley and The Wailers, Peter Tosh, Toots & The Maytals, The Skatalites and Dennis Brown. With extended liner notes from esteemed historians Steve Barrow and David Katz and a complementary 40-minute DVD loaded with interviews, Randy's 50th Anniversary provides an in-depth audio/visual experience on the birth of reggae during what is arguably its most creative period.

Founded in 1958 by Vincent and Patricia Chin, Randy's was the first complete package - studio, distribution, sales and most importantly vibes. Producers and artists crowded Idler's Rest-a famous spot around the corner of Randy's-to get a chance to record in the studio. Many legends today made their mark at this historic location. Bob Marley & The Wailers recorded their ground-breaking album Catch A Fire and Peter Tosh voiced his first two solo albums Legalize It and Equal Rights at Randy's Studio. According to reggae luminary Pat Kelly, Randy's had "the sound people want. We can call it the ghetto sound. The real roots sound."
From ska to reggae, to dub to Jamaica's leading singers, Reggae Anthology: Randy's 50th Anniversary is a history of reggae culture from its beginnings in the 1960s to perhaps its most ingenious peak in the 1970s. This commemorative release puts these influential music-makers in their proper place, the hands of reggae collectors and music fans everywhere. Respect to Randy's every time.

Gyptian releases his highly anticipated second album, I Can Feel Your Pain with VP Records!

On October 21st, 2008, Gyptian unveils his long-awaited sophomore release I Can Feel Your Pain on VP Records. Evolving into a world class singer, Gyptian masters his timbre with his distinguished falsetto and innate ability to connect with his listeners, hence the reason for his album title. From newcomers Imran "Fire Peter" Passard, John "FX" Crawford, Livity Movements and Ray Stephens to fellow production partner Kemar "Flavor" McGregor, this carefully constructed narrative meshes live one drop roots instrumentals and contemporary digital production with inflections of reggae, r&b, pop and rock.

With his real life depictions of ghetto hardships and love, Gyptian will strike a chord with his listeners on this 14 track collection. He opens with bittersweet laments, "Keep Your Calm" (Kemar "Flava" Mcgregor) then "Nobody No Cry" (Ray Stephen for Vertex Productions), painting a portrait of Jamaica's devastatingly violent and corrupted landscape blended with rays of hope and resolution. His love songs are just as thought-provoking and sensitive. With charisma and grace, Gyptian's voice floats effortlessly over the whimsical r&b tinged roots single "Where's My Baby" (Livity Movements) and the title track produced by Imran "Fire Peter" Passard and FX Music, which is currently riding the reggae charts. Other standout tracks include the hypnotic one drop smoker's anthem "Sensi" (Ray Stephens) and the melody driven tribute "Thanks and Praise" (Imran "Fire Peter" Passard).

Lying between baritone and tenor vocals, Gyptian can't be pigeonholed into one sound. In 2005, he introduced a bold new voice that swept Jamaican airwaves with his incendiary hit "Serious Times," which was declared Jamaica's Most Important Song of 2005 beating out Junior Gong Marley's Top Ten Billboard hit "Welcome to Jamrock". Vibe Magazine stated his first single was sung in a "voice like liquid gold. And before the synthesized and digitally altered modulations of R&B hit maker T-Pain and the emerging Jamaican star Demarco were on the scene, Gyptian had mastered this sound that now sets the trend (seen on his debut album My Name Is Gyptian).

My Name Is Gyptian released on VP Records in Fall 2006 received widespread critical acclaim and attention. His first effort showcased "stripped-down, socially conscious tracks that evoke Marley at his most political," according to Caribbean Travel & Life. The album also had a string of successful singles that dominated the reggae charts worldwide including "Serious Times", "Beautiful Lady" and "Mama".

Since then, the matured singer has spread his wings on the latest endeavor I Can Feel Your Pain telling a poignant story of love and letdown with his non-traditional sound.

SEE MORE ON GYPTIAN.

"A new artist with old-school flavor, delivers marvelously mellow love songs..."

January 2007

"Gyptian's brand of rasta-lite throws a lion into the rat race..."

April 2007

...a well-balanced young singer who is committed to creating love saturated roots music... revive reggae.

Dec. 5, 2006

"Gyptian is often hailed for bringing the conscious reggae movement to the mainstream masses."

December 2006

"The resilient Jamaican singer has survival stories to tell... in a voice like liquid gold."

October 2006

"Making sweet noise in reggae...."

October 2006

RANDY'S 50th ANNIVERSARY CD & DVD COLLECTION CELEBRATES IT'S Role in the Birth of Reggae AND EVOLUTION INTO THE WORLD'S LARGEST CARIBBEAN MUSIC LABEL!

VP RECORDS AROUND THE WORLD IN 50 YEARS

RANDY'S 50th ANNIVERSARY CD & DVD COLLECTION

CELEBRATES IT'S Role in the Birth of Reggae AND EVOLUTION INTO THE WORLD'S LARGEST CARIBBEAN MUSIC LABEL

Featuring Bob Marley & The Wailers, Dennis Brown, Peter Tosh, The Maytals & more.

From Kingston, Jamaica to Jamaica, New York, respect is due to Randy's because the former Kingston-based retail shop and studio, which eventually grew into the world's leading reggae label VP Records, set the trend. Celebrating 50 years in the business on a 2 CD/DVD collection (in stores Oct. 28, 2008), Reggae Anthology: Randy's 50th Anniversary brings together 50 of the studio's greatest productions organized by era and features musical icons like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Toots & The Maytals, The Skatalites and Dennis Brown.

Many legends today made their mark at this historic location from Bob Marley and The Wailers' ground-breaking album Catch A Fire to Peter Tosh's first two solo albums Legalize It and Equal Rights. According to reggae luminary Pat Kelly, Randy's had "the sound people want. We can call it the ghetto sound. The real roots sound."

From the very start, Randy's linked itself to the popular yet controversial musical styles of the day - particularly ska, roots and dub reggae. Disc One 1960-1971 features the early politically motivated ska tunes "Independent Jamaica" from Lord Creator and "Malcolm X" from the Skatalites, the Bob Marley & The Wailers cover of the Archie's pop single "Sugar Sugar" and "John And James" by a youthful Toots & The Maytals displaying their spiritual and subtly subversive style. The first album also features musical pioneers like the great trombonist Don Drummond on "Machine Shop", organ player Jackie Mittoo on "End Dust" and the original sound system deejay Winston ‘Count Machukie' Cooper on "Warfare".

The special significance of singers in the 1970s is reflected on Disc Two 1971-1976 with "Don't Go" by Horace Andy, "Lonely Soldier" by Gregory Isaacs, "For The Love of You" by John Holt, and "Cheater" from Dennis Brown. Randy's critical role in the birth of reggae was re-confirmed with the release of Augustus Pablo's "Java". This Clive Chin production was an instant hit not to mention the "1972 Instrumental of the Year" and title track to the first ever dub album, "Java, Java, Java, Java". DJ I-Roy's "Hospital Trolley" (recorded on the "Java" riddim), Peter Tosh's "You Can't Fool Me Again" and Junior Byles' "King of Babylon" are also must-listen recordings included on this extraordinary bicentennial release.

Sly Dunbar one half of the famed riddim twins Sly & Robbie sat in on many Randy's Studio 17 sessions. He describes in the DVD how the Randy's sound was one that "sounds ten times better than the stuff being put out today. We are [now] trying to get back that sound but we can't get it back."

Reggae Legend Beres Hammond releases new album twice! A Moment in Time hits web today, CD w/ DVD in stores October 14, 2008!
(New York, NY, August 19, 2008) One of Jamaica's most soulful music legends, Grammy nominated Beres Hammond will have his new album, A Moment in Time released not once but twice. The album will be available digitally today August 19, 2008 and then in-stores on CD with accompanying DVD on October 14, 2008. Both releases will be on VP Records. The digital release date was moved to coincide with Beres' current North American tour which has been generating excitement among reggae enthusiasts along with quick demand for the album. "We had planned for one worldwide release in October," says Cristy Barber, VP Marketing & Promotion/VP Records, "but quickly decided to make the album available digitally with all the requests we've been getting. Both the tour and the recent airplay on the single made us readdress our retail plan."

Exploring an array of topics from love to self-reflection, this carefully compiled 14 track LP A Moment in Time features Beres's honey-smoked vocals coasting over smooth melodies-produced mainly by the man himself. Beres's daughter Nastassja Hammond also shares production credits on the jazzy bass-driven title track where Beres unveils the simple yet profound truth that "It takes just one moment in time to change your life forever/It takes just one moment in time to put it all together." This is one of his many thought-provoking pieces. On the soulful reggae groove "Friends," he questions the meaning of companionship, and on "Cry No More" he uses real life experiences to find revelation (both cuts produced by Beres). However, a Beres album would not be complete if it did not have its dose of stirring love songs; Beres can't resist temptation on the tender ballad "No I Can't" explaining all the reasons why he could never leave his woman alone. On "I Feel Good," the album's first single by esteemed producer Donovan Germain, Beres paints a picture of an intimate dance while riding a saxophone driven melody. The single quickly went to #1 on the US Media Guide Chart for the reggae category and has remained there for the past two weeks.

Meanwhile, Beres has been selling out venues across the US. (North American Tour dates listed below). Critics call him "the Luther Vandross of Jamaica" (Virginia Pilot, 8/11/08) and say he is "one of most underappreciated reggae artists of his time...a soulful crooner indebted to classic rocksteady and American R&B, one who prefers live instrumentation and writes much of his own material." (KGO Radio 8/2/08)

Known to many as the originator of "Lover's Rock" Beres Hammond has been writing, producing and pouring out his smoky-sweet voice over every kind of riddim track for over 30 years. From his early days as the lead singer of the ‘70s funk-reggae infused band Zap Pow, Beres has consistently produced hits and number one singles.

From his first studio album, SOUL REGGAE in 1976 spawning the number one hit "One Step Ahead" to his 2001 hits "They Gonna Talk" and "Rock Away" from his Grammy nominated album MUSIC IS LIFE, Beres Hammond has collaborated with Reggae's elite-Marcia Griffiths and Buju Banton who are virtually staples on any Beres tour-and has worked with legendary producers Willie Lindo, Steely and Clevie, and Philip "Fattis" Burrell, to name a few. In 2003 VP Records released THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION: CAN'T STOP A MAN to commemorate Hammond's career, and in 2004 his album LOVE HAS NO BOUNDARIES .

While newcomers today are searching for a breakthrough hit and old timers are plotting their comeback, Beres is a study in longevity.

Whether it is romance or reflection, A Moment in Time reveals a new chapter for the renowned reggae icon.

Selector's Choice- The Powerhouse Productions Volumes 1-4 FROM THE LEGENDARY PRODUCER GEORGE PHANG IN STORES OCTOBER 7, 2008!

Selector's Choice- The Powerhouse Productions Volumes 1-4
FROM THE LEGENDARY PRODUCER GEORGE PHANG

IN STORES OCTOBER 7, 2008

17 North Parade is proud to present the most comprehensive collection to date from the legendary George Phang's Powerhouse label. Taken straight from the studio archives, Selector's Choice - Powerhouse Productions Volumes 1-4 feature rare classic material that played a crucial role in the evolution of dancehall. Organized by riddim, these must-have selections define the critical period between the heady days of roots reggae and the evolving originality of ‘80s dancehall.

Entering the business in the early 1980s, before the advent of digital riddims, Phang was one of the first producers to unite instrumentalists possessing strong roots credentials-most notably the Riddim Twins, Sly & Robbie-with dancehall vocal pioneers. Mixing roots vibes with dancehall innovation, Phang set a tone for the 80s that reverberates powerfully to this day with Powerhouse hits still mashing up the dance as well as holding a permanent grasp on the collective memory of dancehall fans worldwide. Beginning with Half Pint's dancehall classic, Greetings, and Barrington Levy's Money Move, Phang continued to score hits with Frankie Paul's Tidal Wave, Roll Call from Tenor Saw, Sugar Minot's Buy Off The Bar and Galong Galong Galong from Yellowman, not to mention countless others. For the first time, Selector's Choice - Powerhouse Productions Volumes 1-4 puts them all within easy reach.

The quality as well as the quantity of hits Powerhouse strung together between 1984 and 1989 underscore its legacy and critical place in reggae collections everywhere. The 160 tracks featured in this 8-disc compilation (and sold separately on four double-discs), including foundation riddims such as Final Mission, Answer and Lecturer, are a roadmap to Phang's genius. For those curious about the changeover from roots reggae to dancehall, this unparalleled set of Powerhouse productions will undoubtedly help make the transition understandable. Specially packaged with new liner notes and photos, Selector's Choice - Powerhouse Productions Volumes 1-4, is both a cool and deadly collector's item and a comprehensive go-to resource for the casual music fan.

This eagerly awaited landmark contains #1 smashes like "Jail", "These Are The Days", "Unknown Number" and "Wine Pon Di Edge" that are dominating the dancehall scene worldwide despite their obvious difference in style. This is one of Busy's trademarks and displayed throughout Loaded. His sense of fun and mischief is allowed full rein on tunes like "Wine Pon Di Edge," "Hey Girl", hip hop/dancehall hybrid "Tic Toc" and "Cool It Baby," which Busy programmed himself. Yet it's his powerful commentaries on the ghetto lifestyle, like "These Are The Days" that have lent Busy Signal's art its raw edge, and made him into such a potent mouthpiece for the disenfranchised youth of Jamaica and beyond. "Knocking At Your Door", "People So Evil" and "Curfew", are the latest examples of this, whereupon real life and his talent for storytelling combine to often spine-chilling effect. Busy Signal, real name Reanno Gordon, cultivated his artistry under the watch of dancehall icon Bounty Killer. With his outstanding mic techniques and restless creativity, he became a member of The Alliance-Bounty Killer's musical powerhouse that spawned dancehall stars like Elephant Man, Mavado and Wayne Marshall. Busy began to receive widespread attention in 2005 with breakthrough hits like "Born and Grow" & "Step Out" and his astounding live performance set which eventually booked him on all the major Jamaican stage shows including the Smirnoff Experience, Island Explosion, Sting and Reggae Sumfest, where he was called up by G-Unit on International Night. The following year, he released his debut album Step Out with Greensleeves Records which garnered positive media attention and a growing fan base worldwide. With Busy's endless ingenuity and talent paired with a fresh production team of young dancehall pioneers setting the tone for this generation, such as Demarco and SSMG, Loaded will be a crucial stage of Busy Signal's development that'll spread his gift far and wide, beyond the confines of his original audience.

Welcome to Nubian Natty of Ground Breaking Records!

Nubian Natty

Antigua-born and St. Croix-raised, Nubian Natty is now poised to invade the US as part of the next wave of the "Cruzan Invasion." She's a conscious DJ who sounds as comfortable riding rootsy riddims as digital dancehall vibes. Female DJs are few and far between in the boys' club of dancehall reggae, but Nubian Natty obviously belongs in this fraternity, her often-stunning vocals resounding with the gruff edge of a freestyling hip-hop MC but tempered with the controlled composure of someone who knows they've mastered their craft and don't feel the need to show off. Her lyrics are cultural yet maintain a sassy old school braggadocio with a playful, charismatic delivery that, at least on the dancehall tracks, is reminiscent of a reggae version of Missy Elliott (as on the title track and the standout "How Do You Figure This?", which are aided by producer Donny Dread's hyper, quirky beats). Her range is evident as she rips through high-energy tunes like "Vatigan Battyman" (sure to conjure images of the Catholic priest scandals) and "Lift It Up" and segues smoothly into the somber "Back Road Baby" and "Empress Cry" with the poise of a veteran artist. It's exciting to hear a woman mixing it up in the dancehall realm, not only hanging with the boys but outperforming most of them on this wonderful album. Indeed, there are very few I've heard who "go like" Nubian Natty

CARIFESTA X LAUNCHED AT COHSOD XVI

One Caribbean; One Purpose - Our life; Our Culture
caribbean countries

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)

The Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), H.E Edwin W. Carrington has communicated the full support of the Community for Guyana, as it prepares to host the tenth Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA X), 22-31 August 2008.

Speaking at the soft launch of CARIFESTA X during the Closing Ceremony of the Sixteenth Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) on Friday, 12 October 2007, the Secretary-General commended Guyana for what he described as "an exceptional start in the preparations for the Festival.""We are impressed," said the Secretary-General, "we are committed. Rest assured that the Community stands ready to give all the support Guyana would need to make the Festival a success."

The Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony, Guyana's Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, who launched the Festival under the theme: One Caribbean; One Purpose - Our life; Our Culture, assured the audience of Ministers, Youth and Culture Directors, Permanent Secretaries and a large representation of the Guyana Media, that his country had both the capacity and experience to stage a successful festival, despite the short time in which they have to do so.

One Caribbean; One Purpose - Our life; Our Culture

In outlining plans for the staging, Dr. Anthony stated that the President of Guyana, H.E. Bharrat Jagdeo
had asked the Prime Minister to head a Special Oversight Committee to ensure that the festival is accorded the priority treatment it deserves. He further outlined the structure of the Secretariat that would be managing the festival, noting that it would be served by several sub-committees with responsibilities for specific areas, for example: health, security, public relations and special events committees.

In addition to the customary Signal Events in CARIFESTA
, the Minister enumerated a raft of other events including youth fora, Calypso events, super concerts, symposia and activities of the indigenous people that would be staged during the ten-day festival. He added that the opening and closing ceremonies would take place at the national stadium; super concerts and an art village would be sited at the National Park, while symposia and a film festival would be located at the National Cultural Centre.

Commenting on the financing of CARIFESTA X, the Minister said Guyana would be establishing several chapters in the Diaspora to mobilize resources to support the Festival. To date, he said, three chapters had already been
established; in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.

"a world-renowned hallmark festival of Caribbean cultural and artistic excellence, that generates economic benefits, unites the Region and excites all the peoples."

Following the unveiling of the CARIFESTA X logo, the Minister urged Member States to identify their delegations very early and indicate to the CARIFESTA Secretariat so that appropriate arrangements could made.

The COHSOD
expressed its commendations and thanks to Guyana for "an excellent job" in advancing plans for the staging of CARIFESTA X.

Coordinated by the Interim Festival Directorate (IFD), the regional advisory body to CARICOM, CARIFESTA is envisioned by the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) as "a world-renowned hallmark festival of Caribbean cultural and artistic excellence, that generates economic benefits, unites the Region and excites all the peoples."
